Mixing indoor plants with botanical art.
As a boutique interior design firm, we're passionate about creating spaces that enhance your happiness *and* your well being. Biophilic design is one principle we like to add to our client design packages to help achieve this goal.
Real plants have been shown to have numerous health benefits, like improving air quality and reducing stress levels. Not only do they help to purify the air by removing harmful toxins, but they can also help to lower blood pressure and improve overall well-being*. Studies have even shown that patients in hospital rooms with plants have a faster recovery time than those in rooms without plants.
But, if you're anything like me, a person who struggles with plant care - maybe you find real plants intimidating. Not to worry! Did you know the mere presence of artificial greenery, what we like to refer to as "permanent botanicals," can be just as impactful as the real deal? While they may not offer the same health benefits as real plants, they have their own psychological benefits. The sight of flowers can trigger positive emotions and memories, which can boost mood, reduce anxiety and have a positive impact on our well-being.
Here are just a few benefits of incorporating biophilic design in your home:
1. Reduced stress and anxiety
Numerous studies have shown that being around nature can have a calming effect on our minds and bodies. By incorporating natural elements into your home, such as plants and flowers, you can reduce stress and anxiety levels.
2. Improved air quality
Plants are natural air purifiers, and by adding them to your home, you can improve the air quality in your living space.
3. Increased creativity
Nature has been shown to stimulate creativity and improve cognitive function. By incorporating natural elements into your home, from indoor plants to botanical prints and patterns, you can enhance your creativity and productivity.
At our design firm, we believe that both real plants and permanent botanicals have their place in biophilic design. To take advantage of all the benefits listed above, we like to incorporate real plants, permanent botanicals and botanical prints and patterns. Below are three of our favorite ways to incorporate Biophilic Design into our client's design packages.
1. Indoor Plants
We love to bring in a handful of low maintenance, pet-friendly options. Three of my favorites include, the Pony Tail Palm, the Money Tree Plant, and the Stromanthe Triostar (I also like snake plants for their air-purifying capabilities, but please note - they are *not* pet-friendly.)
2. Permanent Botanicals
My absolute favorite thing to do, is taking our clients to a sea of permanent botanicals, where we collaborate with experts to create a permanent arrangement. It's like the icing on the cake of their design package - pulling everything together in a beautiful and cohesive way.
3. Botanical Prints and Patterns
Another enjoyable task includes teaming up with our clients, to incorporate their favorite botanical prints and botanical patterns via art, pillows, wallpaper and bespoke furnishings.

When it comes to adding biophilic design to your home, quality is key. For beautiful, durable, long-lasting indoor plants, look for low-maintenance and pet-friendly. For convenience and even more low maintenance, invest in high-quality permanent botanicals to ensure they look realistic and last for years to come. At our design firm, we source only the best quality botanicals for our clients, ensuring they get the most value for their investment.
Remember, designing spaces to enhance your health and happiness is not just a trend, it's a lifestyle. Let us help you create a space that supports your well-being. 🌿🌱🌳
